Exercise: Addiction or Healthy Lifestyle Choice?

This presentation will focus on the differences between excessive exercise and a healthy lifestyle model incorporating exercise. The definitions of addiction, exercise addiction and types of addictions will be discussed. Exploration of the effect of trauma and its potential relationship to excessive exercise will be included. In addition, this presentation will address the correlation be-tween eating disorders, exercise addiction and sports. The neurobiology of addiction and reward pathways as a method of under-standing the addictive component of exercise when developing a healthy lifestyle treatment plan will be addressed. Risk factors for development of exercise addictions and eating disordered behaviors will be high-lighted and discussed in relation to specific sports. Included in this presentation is an Exercise Dependence Assessment tool that has practical application for assessment and development of an individualized treatment plan. Lastly, Dr. Dennis will highlight a specific case study and provide participants an opportunity to share and provide feedback.
